Introduction to Veneering-The Chessboard

Next Class
Monday and Wednesday 5/4,6,11,13,18,20 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Using veneers expands the types of wood and designs that you can include in your projects.  Many of the finest quality and exotic woods are only available as veneers.  Veneers are thin slices of wood, approximately 1/32" in thickness.  They are adhered to substrates such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF).

Veneers can be arranged on the substrate to present the appearance of a finished board or to produce a variety of patterns.

After practicing some cuts and techniques, we will start the chessboard and will be pressing by the end of the day. Tape removal, trimming, edge banding and sanding will take place on Sunday.  This class prepares you for our two other veneering classes: Veneering-Radial Match and Vacuum Pressing.

Key Lessons:

  • Cut veneer and tape,
  • Prepare surfaces and veneers,
  • Pressing,
  • Tape removal,
  • Edge banding.

The  techniques and skills will be applied to the making of a chess board.
